'Cosmic Love' by Florence and the Machine
Director: Tabitha Denholm
There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals as sometimes she sings the words within the video, but at other times, the lyrics and the visuals go together to form a meaning, such as the beating lightbulb resembling a heart, as well as the flash within Florence's eyes, the soundless scream and the ball of light zooming into her eyes, representing the 'falling star' that 'landed in my eyes'.
There are also several literal referances to the lyrics within the video:
The lyric 'so darkness I became', the room that Florence is in becomes darker and darker, and when it reaches the next line with the lyric 'the stars', a costume change has taken place and she is wearing a dress with what look to be lights in it, that resemble the 'stars' that the artist sings about.
There are several shots within the video that can be seen as emphasising Florence's attractiveness within in it, especially the parts where she is dancing in front of the mirrors in a black leotard. When the audience first sees Florence in this way, she is on the floor, the camera looking down at her and she is writhing upon the floor. She then gets up later and does more energetic movements, but often, the camera stays on her stomach as she moves.
The look of the video is quite surreal, sticking to the theme of Florence whose video's are quite surreal and usually involve a lot of dancing and imagery to represent the lyrics. This links to the star's image as she is quite unique, having a style that is seen as a 'retro' and 'vintage' style, but with elements of a modern style too, as is seen by the dress with the lights in the clothing and the black leotard which is more modern.
There are many close-ups of Florence and only she is present within the video, showing her to be the artist and concerntrating on her presence and image as a star.
The use of the locations within the video are very surreal and the use of lighting within the video is very vibrant and strange, using several colours, especially when she was searching in the forest. The lighting also illuminates her face, and shadows are also used effectively in the video, promoting the 'star' and the 'star image'.
The video has a narrative, such as the lightbulb which starts the video and it becomes clear why the lightbulb was flashing in time with a heartbeat, but it is also performance-based, with the artist mostly dancing or referencing the lyrics in some way through performance.
