Planning & Research - Music Video Analysis II

'Stay' by Hurts
Director: Dave Ma

The video was filmed in Iceland, with Icelandic model/actress Anna Thora Alfreds.

The visuals are very moody, with a dark overcast sky, as well as the landscape which is black rocks and sand, as the video takes place on a gravelly, wind-swept beach. The other location used within the music video, is a beach shack, with the pianist of the band, Adam Anderson, playing alongside the lead singer, Theo Hutchcraft.

The imagery within the video is formal, and less surreal than Florence and the Machine's video 'Cosmic Love', where lots of colours and a variety of different lighting techniques were used to give it a colourful and energetic feel. This music video feels more melancholy.

There is less relation to the lyrics in this video, with the lyrics simply being sung rather than having a clear image representing the lyrics. However, the location itself does seem desolate and that links back to the song being about the end of a relationship, two people parting ways and one of them wanting the other to 'stay'. This could symbolise the feelings of the singer within the music video.

The camera also focuses on the journey of the two characters a lot, and features them in many close-up shots together. This focuses on Dyer's theory of a star's image, using a variety of media to get themselves constructed by the audience and to also gain popularity by the audience. With the model/actress Anna Thora Alfreds appearing in the music video, it will appeal to her fans and the song will gain popularity with them because of her appearance. Because she also appears in the music video, that boosts her career as she is taking part in numerous forms of media.

The music video also gains popularity because of the appearance of the lead singer, the star, who builds his own image by appearing in a music video of his song, further gaining popularity, especially because of the fact that the video will appear in different media such as the internet and television.

The images of the dancers also seem quite surreal and very god-like, mythological and ethereal, especially with the cloth draped over them and the wind flowing through the cloth. This can be viewed as something out into the video to appeal to the audience as something sensual.
